Cannes: U.K.s Curzon Buys Shia LaBeoufs Borg/McEnroe, Lars von Trier Serial Killer

'After Love' plays in Cannes Directors' Fortnight

LONDON – Leading U.K. distributor Curzon Artificial Eye has picked up tennis drama “Borg/McEnroe,” starring Shia LaBeouf, and Lars von Trier’s serial killer pic “The House That Jack Built,” as well as Joachim Lafosse’s Cannes Directors’ Fortnight entry “After Love,” starring Berenice Bejo, and Niall McCann’s music documentary “Lost in France.”

“Borg/McEnroe” centers on the 1980 Wimbledon contest between champ Bjorn Borg and talented upstart John McEnroe. Sverrir Gudnason is Borg, LaBeouf plays McEnroe, and Stellan Skarsgard portrays Borg’s trainer, Lennart Bergelin. It will be directed by Danish director Janus Metz, who won Cannes Critics’ Week in 2010 with “Armadillo” and directed an episode of “True Detective.” The film, which is being sold by SF Intl., is set for a fall 2017 theatrical release.

“The House That Jack Built,” which is represented by sales agent TrustNordisk and produced by Louise Vesth of Zentropa, is told from the point of view of a serial killer who sets out to commit the perfect murder. It is set in Washington State in the 1970s and 80s.

Claustrophobic social drama “After Love” takes place inside a Brussels household “where the emotional connection holding a couple together has gone, leaving only tension and resentment in its place,” according to Variety’s reviewer.

After 15 years of living together, Marie and Boris decide to get a divorce. Marie had bought the house in which they live with their two daughters, but it was Boris who had completely renovated it. Since he cannot afford to find another place to live, they must continue to share it. Cedric Kahn plays Boris alongside Bejo as Marie in the film, which is being sold by Le Pacte.

Irish/Scottish co-production “Lost in France,” which will world premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival in June, is a documentary that explores the rise of Glasgow’s independent music scene from the 1990s to the present day.
