Festival feud fires up
MONTREAL — Claude Chamberlan, founder and director of the Montreal Festival du Nouveau Cinema, has left the 33-year-old event, the latest casualty of the city’s bitter three-way fest feud.
Earlier this year, the fest’s prexy, Daniel Langlois, joined the board of the New Montreal FilmFest, set up to challenge the failing Montreal World Film Festival.
Langlois’ replacement, Andre Lamy, said he asked Chamberlan to step down but refused to say why.
Ironically, it was Chamberlan who convinced industry vet Lamy to become prexy.
Chamberlan has criticized the Spectra-run New Montreal FilmFest for initially choosing to run its premiere edition at the same time as his event in mid-October. The New Montreal FilmFest backed down and shifted its dates to mid-September.
Chamberlan was unavailable for comment Thursday.

Earlier in the week, the Nouveau indefinitely postponed its outdoor June film event Magnifico. The Nouveau is set to move from its location in the Ex-Centris complex, owned by Langlois.
On Thursday, the city’s third fest, the Montreal World Film Festival, announced the jury for this year’s edition, Aug. 26-Sept. 5.
They are Chinese filmmaker Chen Kaige, Russian director Pavel Lungin, Chilean director Silvio Caiozzi and Claudio Gubitosi, founder of the Giffoni Film Festival in Italy. Greek filmmaker Theo Angelopoulos will head the jury.
